This just arrived on my phone from a number not in my address book – so it just came up as a number rather than a person or company name:
Hi! It’s as good as it gets SALE! Our mighty $AUD has power slammed Uncle Sam – prices crashed on all new stock. So so low! This SAT 10-4 be early. SMS NO 2stop.
Boy, they sure crammed a lot of information into that small message. Except for the company name, what they sell, and where they’re located. Nice work, unknown marketers!

Hey, great blog and website. The message your got was obviously spam. Here are a few legitimate questions… How should SMS marketing be done? Is it on the way out anyway with the popularity of smart phones that can access websites, social media and email? Or is it something businesses should be focusing on?
I wouldn’t say it’s on the way out Nick. A few things to consider.
1. Don’t Spam! You need to provide something of value to them and always have proper opt-in. One of our clients is a Subway restaurant and we place a sign ‘text Cookie to 0418XXXXXX’ to receive a free cookie, this opt’s them in giving them not only a free cookie but two coupons sent to their phone per month, and opt out at any time. – All value!
2. Is it on the way out because of smartphones? No way! What that allows us to do now is use a url shortener to add a link to the bottom of the text message, if they have a smart phone they can click it and be sent straight to a mobile optimised website.
3. Re:Simon, message was from a phone number not business name…. be wary that just because you can change the headers to a company name, you may be making yourself non compliant as you cannot reply to opt out… I think the Avoca will be hearing from the ACMA about this shortly!!
4. Anyone looking to get in and do some cheap text marketing for their business, we currently use http://australia.transmitsms.com they charge only $49/month for unlimited keywords (A keyword is something that people text in to get an automatic reply, while automatically opting them in and placing them on a text mailing list).
